Transformer Art Wrap Project Underway!
We’re pleased to announce that Transforming Georgetown, the Georgetown Arts & Cultural Commission’s project to turn drab utilitarian transformer boxes into public art pieces, recently wrapped the first box on May 9th!
Located on median between the Well Fargo Bank and Hub Shops parking lots on King Street, the box is now wrapped in photos of art quilts made by the city’s own Vermelle “Bunny” Smith Rodrigues, a South Carolina Community Scholar in the Traditional Arts and co-founder of the Gullah Museum of Georgetown and the museum’s quilting circle.
The city’s Arts & Cultural Commission (GACC) started planning this project about a year ago under then Commission Chair Susan Lumpkin. Current Commission Chair Dell Omega Grant took up the reins, successfully moving the project forward with the help of current commission members Alan Sherlock, who took the photos of the quilt, Al Joseph, Natalie Pantuso, Nathalie Humphreys, Janette Rodrigues, Andy Friedman, Susan Shoman, and former commissioner Gerry Hogan.
Check back here soon for the latest news and location on Transforming Georgetown! We have more transformer boxes scheduled to be covered this month by Pawleys Island artist and designer Keels Culberson Swinnie!
Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen!
