Transformer Art Wrap Project: Keels Culberson Swinnie
Artist and designer Keels Culberson Swinnie’s work celebrates the Lowcountry. It’s instantly recognizable from her illustrations in author Flo Phillips’ celebrated Goodnight Historic Georgetown and Goodnight Pawleys books—and now you can pages from the book as you drive down Front Street! We’re pleased to announce that Keels’ illustrations are part of Transforming Georgetown, the Georgetown Arts & Cultural Commission’s project to turn drab utilitarian transformer boxes into public art pieces!
Located across the street from the George Hotel, the transformer box is wrapped in an illustration of local fishing boats from Goodnight Historic Georgetown. Look for more page from this beloved children’s book.
Keels is a native of Pawleys Island and although her love of travel has taken her to many incredible places, she knows that there is nowhere like her beloved Lowcountry. She now lives in downtown Georgetown with her husband and children.
The city’s Arts & Cultural Commission (GACC) started planning the Transforming Georgetown project in 2023 under then Commission Chair Susan Lumpkin. Current Commission Chair Dell Omega Grant took up the reins, successfully moving the project forward with the help of current commission members Alan Sherlock, who took the photos of the quilt, Al Joseph, Natalie Pantuso, Nathalie Humphreys, Janette Rodrigues, Andy Friedman, Susan Shoman, and former commissioner Gerry Hogan.
